Forty years ago, The Phantom of the Opera burst onto London’s West End, redefining musical theatre with its scale, emotion and spectacle. Today, it remains one of the most decorated shows of all time, with multiple Olivier and Tony Awards and countless international accolades. This new Opera Australia production, staged at Fleet Steps, Mrs Macquaries Point, reimagines the iconic musical in an open-air setting. It is directed by Simon Phillips and designed by Gabriela Tylesova. Audiences will hear Webber’s unforgettable score, including “The Music of the Night,” “Masquerade,” “All I Ask of You”, and the sweeping title song, performed against the backdrop of Sydney Harbour. The Story

Set in 19th-century Paris, Phantom of the Opera centers on a masked man living beneath the grand Paris Opera House who becomes infatuated with Christine Daaé, a young chorus singer. As Christine’s talent draws attention and success, the Phantom’s obsession leads to tension among Christine, her childhood friend Raoul, and the mysterious figure in the shadows. Themes of love, jealousy, identity, and beauty versus darkness are woven through both melody and atmosphere. What will happen when the mask slips and truths emerge?
