Topping the popularity charts is the unmissable ‘Seals for the Wild’ show that includes rescued and relocated seals. The show begins with seals making a grand entrance before diving into a pool of water, smoothly gliding on floors, flopping around and even mimicking sharks. The showrunners also highlight the animal’s physical features, eating habits and life cycles. As a special treat, they even bring a few seals into the audience arena so that you can ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’ over them!
Another daily special is the ‘Free Flight Birds’ showcase that captures your awe as birds swoop into the arena with the Sydney Harbour as a backdrop. During the show, black-breasted buzzards break hard-shelled fruits with small rocks. Then, a large Andean Condor, with its three-metre wings, stops by to peck at a meaty treat. The show also features soundless owls, soaring eagles and colourful cockatoos.
Established over 100 years ago, in 1916, Taronga Zoo showcases Australia’s wildlife with their Nura Diya exhibit. Walk along a trail that weaves together four distinct landscapes that feature kangaroos hopping by, adorable koalas hugging trees, and dingoes sizing you up. There is also the Nguwing Nura or nocturnal country exhibit where you can encounter yellow-bellied gliders, spinifex hopping mice, ghost bats ad western quolls.
Get a little closer to your pals from the animal kingdom by signing up for animal encounters. The Elephant encounter takes you behind the scenes to meet up with the Asian giants while at the meerkat enclosure, the tiny creatures scurry by you. Furry capybaras demand treats from you while koalas hang from trees and show off their undeniable cuteness. You can also sign up for a feeding session with giraffes as they gracefully lower their long necks to eat straight out of your hands.
To ensure you have an immersive experience, the zoo’s friendly keepers host talks, throughout the day. During these sessions, they share their intimate knowledge of the Taronga’s noteworthy inhabitants including the dingoes, elephants, giraffes, penguins, chimpanzees, camels and more. These talks are free with the zoo entry so make sure you sign up for a few to get a closer understanding of animals.
In the sunny months, between September and April, the zoo is open between 9.30 AM and 5 PM.
During winter, from May to August, the zoo operates between 9.30 AM and 4.30 PM.
We recommend you go during the cooler hours, early in the mornings or later in the afternoons, to avoid the crowds. Also, it lowers your chances of missing out on spotting the animals since many retreat into the shade when it goes hot. You may also miss out if the weather is too cold, so choose an early summer day for your visit.
